Visit to Bruce Stream, Craigieburn Forest Park.

I visited the Bruce Stream, Craigieburn Forest Park, on a recent trip from 15-18 February 2011. I entered the valley from Cora Lynn, Bealey Hut, Lagoon Saddle and a scree slope on the north side of Black Range after passing above the erosion gully at grid reference (old maps) 935928.  After making my way down Bruce Stream through the steep bush below the scree slope, not an easy or recommended route, I travelled up the stream bed to where Junction Stream comes in on the true left and then down the stream bed to the bridge on State Highway 73. I saw some deer sign. Passing the 3-4 metre high waterfall at 928934, at the junction of the upper and middle thirds, is difficult and a rope would be useful. I finished my trip a couple of days earlier than originally planned. My original bookings had me arriving at Worchester Street, Christchurch, on the West Coast shuttle at 1200 and leaving by Intercity Coach at 1400 on 22 February 2011.  The 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch at 1251 on 22/02/2011. I spent my first night on 15/02/2011 in the Bealey Hut, the second on 16/02/2011 in a tent above Lagoon Saddle, and the last night in a tent in the Bruce Stream Valley below the waterfall.

Welcome to moa sightings

Welcome to this blog on moa sighting claims. The death of Denis Dutton occurred on 28 December 2010 in Christchurch from complications of prostate cancer. Denis spoke out on moa sighting claims after the 1993 Craigieburn Forest Park claim and wrote the foreward for Moa Sightings published by Paua Press in 2010. His passing is a time of sadness and my thoughts are with his family. In the foreward Dennis noted that his entangling himself with moa sighting claims was to his “lasting regret.” He wrote, “Conscious of the fact that Skeptics have been accused of a close-minded, dismissive attitude to reports of unusual phenomena, my first reaction to the Craigieburn sighting was to try to remain open-minded. In retrospect, I think that dismissiveness ought to have been the order of the day. That episode caused much aggravation for many people, not least for journalist David Wilson of the Press.” The Craigieburn sighting claim is discussed in some detail in chapter 151 of Moa Sightings, volume 3, available from the Paua Press Bookshop with free world-wide shipping.
